Week 2.44: Special Deluxe is a photo I took last autumn while I was visiting friends in Georgia. It’s a car...a car in a junkyard. Obviously, it has seen better days. Somehow, I still found it completely fascinating and beautiful. In addition to the make and model, it had Special Deluxe written on it in cursive. Rusting, cracked, worn and torn. Somehow elegant in the dying. Perfect for my lens.
I wonder if I would’ve loved Special Deluxe on the first day it rolled out of the factory on whitewall tires with a gleaming fresh coat of paint and polished glass windows. Probably. I wonder if I would’ve loved Special Deluxe when it got it’s first dent or cracked windshield. Probably. I wonder if there would’ve been a twinge in my heart when the odometer rolled into the high thousands and repair bills became more frequent. Probably. I wonder if the stories this Special Deluxe could tell would move my heart...going out to anniversary dinners, baby coming home from the hospital, first day of school, Sundays to church. Probably.
Somehow, all of that still exists to me in this shell of a car surrounded by weeds, scruffy trees, tall grass and other forgotten vehicles. Simple. Yet profound.
"It is always the simple things that change our lives. And these things never happen when you are looking for them to happen. Life will reveal answers at the pace life wishes to do so. You feel like running, but life is on a stroll. This is how God does things."~Donald Miller, Blue Like Jazz
Life seems like pell-mell rushing to me as of late. And yet some things can’t happen fast enough. Odd. Paradoxical. And yet, when I really stop to think about it, I’ve never once thought God’s timing was wrong. Odd. Paradoxical. And yet, never wrong.
Things and people and experiences and memories roll into and out of our life exactly on time in God’s calendar. That’s such a comfort to a girl who can’t seem to follow a calendar very well. Those of you who’ve received a late birthday or Christmas present can attest to that. That is, if you got one at all, because I rarely remember exact birthdays anyway, even for the most important people in my life.
That doesn’t make you any less important to me. Which is why I choose to share with you, my important people, that I have met someone. Someone pretty important to me. Someone I think is Special Deluxe.
Special Deluxe
A conversation with someone
Gave me pause to think
A contemplation of something
I was on the brink
A survey filled out with a friend
Made me reassess
A celebration over sushi
I was on the list
Six hundred profiles later
Showed me angles infinite
A question in my mail
I was in the mix
Hours and hours later
Grew his love for me
A confirmation strong
The only one I see
All the longing over years
Strewn with hope
And shattered fears
Have brought us home
Many the ways I see him now
Make me long for all
An imperfect match of hearts
Both answering a call
Something more, something higher
Something bigger than the two
Eternity, humanity
Forgotten earlier youth
Healing following heartbreak
Wonder growing into awe
Destiny, The one for me
Recalling an earlier dream
