Week 44: Flower from a Boy touches on a few subjects I love: flowers, my favorite candle, Joey and spontaneity...among other things...An outside observer might not see all that I just listed, so I'll tell you why I love Flower from a Boy so much. A few Fridays ago we had a big, gorgeous, juicy full moon that rose over the mountains and shone on our city. It just so happened that Joey was spending the night and he was very hyper. I decided to take him to our neighborhood park as a means of getting rid of some of his excess energy...We took the usual route and made the usual stops involved with taking Joey to the poke (his word).
A warm day had turned dusky after the sun sank over the horizon leaving behind its warm essence rising up out of the grasses, bushes and flowers all along the way. As we passed a patch of white flowers in the grass we were overcome with the sweetest smells of fresh life and radiance and blossoming...smells that only spring has to offer.
It's already bewitching enough to be outside under a full moon holding the hand of a little boy who can barely contain his excitement. Add spring time with the accompanying perfume and this girl felt pretty close to heaven. Joey was enchanted as well; overcome with delight he plucked a flower and offered it up to me with the exclamation: "It smews good, Sawah!!"
I, of course, tucked it behind my ear and kept soaking every sound and smell and texture into my heart as we skipped toward the park. The little white flower clung on throughout all the excitement until I finally crawled into bed and pulled it out of my hair just before falling asleep with Joey tucked in beside me.
It was a few days later when my glance fell on the little white flower and I was struck with how very much I love to get flowers...especially the flowers I have received spontaneously. It hasn't happened too many times; but when it has, I've always been moved. I won't list all the events when I've been spontaneously gifted with a flower, but I can tell you that flowers gifts are synonymous with very special memories.
Rather than recounting my own experiences, I'd like to share some lyrics that explain why I love flowers...and I think it explains why every other girl loves to get flowers. The short answer is: because we're girls. The longer answer can be found below...And here's a link to listen to Rosie Thomas' song, October.
October
by Rosie Thomas
Make her a flower in late December
When the sun is not shining on her
Write her a love song and play it all day long
To remind her of all that she is worth
Never never leave her
Take her on long drives for ice-cream by sea sides
And give her your coat when she is cold
Tell her you miss her when you’re close enough to kiss her
And that you’d walk a thousand miles to tell her so
But never never leave her
Take photographs of her on Brooklyn street in October
When her nervous smile is slightly curved
Some days when she is slightly down tell her it’s okay to frown
It makes you just fall more in love with her
But never never leave her

This one is a special one. I have to admit that I have gotten many flowers from the little boy mentioned. So many that I don't even keep them. But as I was reading I had the thought that I should be keeping them in a box especially made for those little occasions when I am given a flower by Joey. He may or may not grab them with the thought that it is something special but he gets them and gives them just the same. Little ones are a reminder of how small we really are in comparison to how Big God is. xoxo butterfly

I love this. I feel very much the same way holding the hand of a small one that loves you deeply and purely. There is nothing like it!
