Week 35: The Art of Living

Week 35: The Art of Living was taken at my friend's cabin in Prescott, Arizona. Her uncle, Paul Martin, built this cabin in the 1960's. Uncle Paul is gone, but Miss Morningstar bought the cabin to keep it in the family...and because she loves her little red cabin and the idea of breathing new life into it.

I tromped around in the snow and mud and found this sign that must've been posted near the road at one point. It had letters and numbers spelling out the family name and the street address on it...or, I should say: it used to have those letters and numbers on it. Now just a few wooden characters cling to the sign, teetering on the brink of separation. Being the art lover that I am, I was more than entertained to see that the three middle letters were the ones still attached.

Anyway, this week I've decided to share excerpts from my "Before 40 List." This list is the equivalent of "Things to Do Before You Die"...except that I want to do these things before I keep living and go on to do other things...

This list was created on the back of a sushi menu on my 30th birthday in Bend, Oregon with my sister and my dear Wahkuna.

#1: Learn I-Tunes (or an equivalent) like nobody's business.
#2: Do something mosaic with my glass collection.
#3: Charge $2,000 for a photography gig.
#4: Volunteer regularly.
#5: See Dave Matthews Live...something I missed in my 20's.
#6: Become a connoisseur of something amazing.
#7: Have children...possibly African or Asian??
#8: Go camping.
#9: See more live music in my 30's than I did in my 20's.
#10: Learn to tie a cherry stem with my tongue.
#11: Polar bear swim.
#12: Do a "Trash the Dress" photo session.
#13: See a circus...again...
#14: Break a rule.
#15: See the East Coast in fall.
#16: Go to a major museum...my #1 choice: Bilbao, Spain's Guggenheim.
#17: Display my photography in a gallery.
#18: Go snowboarding.
#19: Commandeer a vehicle.
#20: Sew a wearable fashion statement.
#21: Fly an ultralight in Hawaii.
#22: Take a superfluous continuing education class.
#23: Explore the tangible fine arts medium.
#24: Overcome the fear and loathing of Thai food.
#25: Fire a crappy friend.
#26: Throw my Superhero Skate Night event.
#27: Learn/perfect the art of haiku.
#28: Attend a cherry blossom extravaganza.
#29: Slow dance in the rain (preferably with Josh Radin involved somehow...I'll even take background music here, People).
#30: Stop picking my split ends.
#31: Kiss someone spontaneously.
#32: Live in and/or conduct business from a loft.
#33: Own and rock a collection of vinyls.
#34: Be an active library card user.
#35: Write a book.

Haven't you already fired a crappy friend or two?! Just sayin'!

I'm not sure about commandeering a vehicle-do you have the power?

Just kidding, of course. What a great list.

Dear WeddingP:
Thank you for luving my list...I only wish I knew who you were and/or how you found me...ah...the mysteries of the internet. ;)

Dear The Leah Scott:
Make your list already!!!
A "Trash the Dress" is a shoot that happens after the wedding. Bride gets all gussied up and then you take her somewhere kinda sketch...ie: industrial, grungy, the sticks, a junkyard etc. and shoot away. Sometimes the groom will meet up with you at some point in the shoot, sometimes not. Sometimes the bride ends up splashing through a fountain or waterway of some sort.
The object of the whole thing is to get some really unpredictable and awesome shots since no one cares if you mess the dress up. Now that the wedding is over and the dress is probably going to the cleaners anyway, everyone is chill...Can I schedule you for one? ;)

Dear Matty:
Yes. Crap friends have been fired previously...though, the funny thing is, most of the crap ones usually fire themselves for me...nice, right?
Also, commandeering a vehicle is definitely a possibility. I don't have the legal rights as a law enforcement agent, but I have consulted with one and have been instructed in how to go about it without ending up in the clink. Besides, I've seen "So I Married an Axe Murderer" several times in which Tony somewhat successfully commandeers a vehicle...no one said it had to be a car, did they? ;)

#24 I'm working on this one.
#25 I actually had thai food tonight for the FIRST time ever!
It was weird, kinda yummy. Not sure if I want it again or not.

Dear Meliss~
Umm...Did you mean to say you are working on #24: Fire a crappy friend?!?! If so, good luck to you, my comrade in arms!
Also, congrats on doing #25...I had a very negative experience with Thai food once. Sad thing is, I know I should love it! I love Asian food: sushi, Indian and Vietnamese are some of my faves. Hence why it's on the list...
